The Plantation’s in-house florist, Lynley Cusens (www.floralcreations.co.za), chats about floral tables runners for weddings:
Floral runners are still very popular but many are surprised at their cost. This is largely due to the misconception that foliage is cheap. If done well a floral runner requires a lot of foliage and is quite labour intensive to make.
To stretch along a rectangular table they usually need to be 2.5 meters long which requires lots of foliage.
Pinterest is full of pics of foliage laid freehand on tables but unfortunately in our hot South African climate it generally is not an option. If done freehand and not in oasis the chances are high they won’t last for your special day!
Grey penny gum is a popular choice and unfortunately is neither cheap nor suitable for use out of water or not in oasis.
That said, if you don’t mind a variety of foliage there are a few ways to reduce the cost. Cheaper foliage can be disguised underneath your foliage of choice.
When using floral runners a bit of height in the form of candles help to create impact. They create a luxurious look and can work with or without flowers.
